You may experience some improvement in your appetite, sleep patterns and energy level in the first one to two weeks of using Effexor. Noticing a positive change in these areas is usually an early sign that the medication is starting to work in your body.

It may take six to eight weeks before you notice improvements in your mood, feelings, thoughts and level of interest in certain activities after starting treatment with Effexor. Your healthcare provider may suggest adjusting your dosage or making changes to the way you use your medication. Do not adjust your dosage of Effexor or stop using this type of medication without first talking to your healthcare provider.

Effexor XR and generic venlafaxine come in tablet or capsule form. Make sure to follow the instructions provided by your healthcare provider and use your medication only as directed. If your medication comes in capsule form, make sure to take it whole. Do not crush, dissolve or chew the capsule. As with other antidepressants, Effexor and generic venlafaxine can potentially cause a range of side effects.

Although uncommon, Effexor and other antidepressants can potentially cause more severe side effects. In some cases, these interactions may lead to a severe increase in serotonin levels, referred to as serotonin syndrome. Make sure to tell your healthcare provider about all medications you use or have recently used before you begin treatment with Effexor for anxiety.

Make sure to:. Keep using Effexor, even after your symptoms improve. Venlafaxine, the ingredient in Effexor, can control the symptoms of depression and anxiety. Make sure to keep using Effexor, even after you experience improvements. Over time, your healthcare provider may suggest making changes to your Effexor usage based on how you respond to this medication.

Talk to your healthcare provider before stopping Effexor. If you want to stop taking Effexor, talk to your healthcare provider first. Serotonin syndrome symptoms may include shivering, diarrhea, confusion, severe muscle tightness, fever, seizures, and death. SNRI antidepressants including venlafaxine may increase the risk of bleeding events.

Combined use of aspirin, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs e. This may include gums that bleed more easily, nose bleed, or gastrointestinal bleeding. Some cases have been life threatening. To date, there are no known problems associated with long term use of venlafaxine.

It is a safe and effective medication when used as directed. Venlafaxine should not be taken with or within 2 weeks of taking monoamine oxidase inhibitors MAOIs. Venlafaxine may increase the effects of other medications that can cause bleeding e. Sleep, energy, or appetite may show some improvement within the first weeks. Improvement in these physical symptoms can be an important early signal that the medication is working.

Depressed mood and lack of interest in activities may need up to weeks to fully improve. Depression and certain other psychiatric disorders are themselves associated with increases in the risk of suicide. This risk may persist until significant remission occurs. In short-term studies, antidepressants increased the risk of suicidality in children, adolescents, and young adults when compared to placebo.

Short-term studies did not show an increase in the risk of suicidality with antidepressants compared to placebo in adults beyond age Adults age 65 and older taking antidepressants have a decreased risk of suicidality. Patients, their families, and caregivers should be alert to the emergence of anxiety, restlessness, irritability, aggressiveness and insomnia. All patients being treated with antidepressants for any indication should watch for and notify their health care provider for worsening symptoms, suicidality and unusual changes in behavior, especially during the first few months of treatment.
