How tall people fight

Use evasive tactics. Move constantly to keep the larger opponent from grabbing you or landing strikes. Stay light and poised on the balls of your feet so that you can change directions quickly and keep him guessing.

One wrong move could end the fight in their favor. Get in close. When your opponent is least prepared, close the distance between you and move in close. This will neutralize his superior size and reach and put him in the right range to land some hard shots of your own. Finding the right timing and approach for getting in close is paramount for emerging victorious—you cannot win a fight with a bigger attacker by playing into his strengths.

Tire them out. One of the downsides of being taller and heavier is that it takes more effort to move, and as a result you run out of energy faster. Use this to your advantage. Keep slipping, dodging and moving constantly until your opponent begins to slow down. At that point, you can use your speed to slip into close range and unleash some punishing offense of your own. Muhammad Ali used this gameplan to win a championship bout with the larger George Foreman at the Rumble in the Jungle in Part 3.

Use the element of surprise. If you suspect things are about to take a nasty turn, be the one to make the first move. End a tense standoff with a sudden, well-placed blow to the jaw or solar plexus the soft, fleshy outer edge of the diaphragm beneath the sternum.

Be careful when going for a sucker punch. Stick and move. His reach and power will just be too much to handle. Take your time staying away from his strikes, waiting for an opening and then closing the gap and landing a hard shot. Attack the body when you don't have a clear shot at your opponent's head.

The solar plexus is a sensitive target that when hit just right can drive all the air out of an opponent's lungs and leave them gasping for breath. The ribs are also quite fragile, and can be broken with only a few pounds of force per square inch. Aim for sensitive targets. One well-placed blow is all you'll need to put your towering opponent out of commission.

Everybody has the same anatomical weakness, despite size differences. Hitting the nose can blind them momentarily by causing their eyes to well up with tears, which gives you an opportunity to throw a fight-ending punch. A kick to the groin will compromise their mobility and instantly take the will to fight out of them. Go for submissions on the ground. In this situation, scramble for a submission technique, a hold or lock that incapacitates an attacker by neutralizing a single part of the body.

By applying a joint lock, armbar or choke, you may be able to do enough damage to put an end to the scuffle. Chokes disrupt an opponent's circulation or ability to breathe, causing unconsciousness.

It only takes a firm hold and a few moments to put an opponent to sleep. They are effective against attackers who leave their arms extended momentarily after throwing a punch. Forget about honor or fairness: there are no rules on the street. Bite, gouge eyes, pull hair, chop the throat, bend fingers back, knee the groin and do anything else you have to do to survive.

In the best case scenario, the sight of you holding a weapon may be enough to make your attacker back down. To avoid escalating the violence further, make a run for it as soon as you have your opponent reeling. It is highly useful in close range. Grappling not only gives you a corporal advantage over your opponent but also helps you in wearing them out.

People who are involved in the fight, try to grapple their opponent, which tires them and makes them fatigued. A tall person has a little counter to offer when he is roughed up against the ground.

Posture, as well, is a very important factor when it comes to martial arts and fights. Posture is a way a person operates in his day to day life. This includes walking, running, sitting, standing etc. So, it is basically the way the body of a person functions or performs. A tall, lanky person has a natural posture which does not go with the average position recommended in a fight scene. The off-centre posture of a tall person makes it difficult for him to maintain the balance of his feet.

Fighting is all about reacting to the maneuvers and blows offered by your opponent. The body structure of a tall person makes it difficult for him to counter the impacts of his opponent. The reaction time also is higher in case of taller persons due to their build.

In such a scenario, a short heighted person has the upper hand as he can use this time to lay more fatal blows to his opponent in a shorter span of time. A very important arena in which a person with a greater height lacks is the punching power.

People who have shorter height have a greater punching power; just look at Joe Frazier or Mike Tyson. When you carefully notice their fighting styles, you will find that they do not have a nice reach but they use the power in their punches to the next level. The punches are very fast and explosive. You have a better reach, more confidence, and you might even manage to overawe your opponent with your body build and structure.

Although it is also very important to understand that having a good height is like a double-edged sword, it comes with its own impediments and hindrances. The main obstacle to this is being slow. In most cases, you will try to reach their head, so your strikes will come upwards.

But a taller opponent has more options. They can hit downwards or try to land uppercuts. You have to expect blows coming from every direction. I recommend, when you are boxing against a taller opponent, to wait for them to throw a punch at you. Then to slip their shot outside. Like I already mentioned, usually, your punches will come upwards, especially if you are trying to land shots in the head. The problem is that, in most cases, the other boxer will try to keep you at a distance. So, in a case to reach them, oftentimes, you might overextend yourself and your head might remain unprotected. In those cases, you might turn into an easy target and be counterpunched. They just need to make you overextend yourself while you are trying to hit them and then to counterpunch you.

The best way to prevent that from happening is to just outsmart your taller rival. Instead of aiming at the head right away, try to land some body shots. Then you can land some clean blows to the head. You need to use multiple punches combinations and to change the levels. Combine body shots with strikes to the head to make the taller boxer guess what is coming next.

That is the way to catch them. Jab with head to the side. Turn thumb down at the end of the punch. Jab with head to the left.

Keep left shoulder up to protect chin. Look at the guys toes and swing your head down, making it a whole body and core movement like smashing with a sledge hammer, rather than just a movement of the arm. The video seemed to illustrate the movement better than the pictures. The power comes mainly from your core. Hitting a sledgehammer into a tyre or chopping wood are two good ways of building overhand right power.

See the Mark Hunt Analysis for Russian hooks. Your throw the punch with your arm rotated and the thumb turned down towards the floor. This gives it more range. This is a favourite technique of Fedor, and the Hunt-man himself:. You can even throw a kind of Russian-hook-overhand-right. He throws a straight left, then steps forward with his right foot and throws a straight right, then steps forward with his left foot and throws another left, etc.

Try it also with the double jab, jab as normal, and then on the second jab, step forwards with your right foot. At the start of the GIF, notice how his right leg moves forwards as he throws the punch with his right hand. He is able to throw the punch quicker by throwing it from his waist :. At UFC , against Overeem, Roy Nelson appeared to get a knock-down by throwing an uppercut as he moved his right foot forward into south-paw stance, and then landed a looping hook stepping forward into orthodox.

Keep you chin tucked, elbows and shoulders high. Step forwards with your rear leg or even do a skip-step to increase the range of your jab. Keep head off centre though This is completely unorthodox, and something I kind of made up. This way, even if his arms are twice as long as yours; as you are stepping forward and jabbing, you should still be able to land.

You can usually block it just by raising your knee as you would to block a roundhouse. You can also dodge most front kicks to the body by sucking your belly in and throwing your feet and hips back. Just make sure at least 1 hand is still protecting your face. A block is good, but obviously an effective counter is much better. Drill blocking by lifting your leg up, then countering with your own kick. Try shifting your hips back, grabbing the kick and sweeping his standing leg.

Stay in the pocket, keep your chin tucked, move your head out of centre-line and counter punches with kicks. Countering punches with kicks is one of my favourite ever techniques. Keep the other guy guessing constantly.

This may work in boxing, better than with Thai. Constantly drop your level and make your opponent think about the takedown. Just bend your legs and drop your shoulders. Keep one hand up, to protect your face. You can even protect it with your elbow. There is the superman jab:. This is a great technique, follow up with a right roundhouse as shown by GSP above. You can even follow up with a left front kick or teep. Instead of putting your left leg down on the floor, after you throw your jab.

Throw a left front kick instead. I sometimes follow up with an orthodox superman punch:. Interestingly, he also seems to throw a jab before his superman punch. Use open-palms — this blocks the space and line of attack for a jab or cross from your opponent. If they still throw a jab or cross, you can try and parry down-block the punch and come over the top with a counter, or lean-back and come back with a counter.

This helps immensely.
